Photos from Norway :)

I guess I should explain some for all you non-Norwegians. The 17th of May is Norway's national day (Independence Day) and it's a big celebration. I guess the most well known part is the children's parade, where all the children participate. The concept isn't really more than walking along being happy and shouting, but it's really special when everyone is so into it. Oh and marching bands of course. I love the drums ^^

I'm not really sure how old the tradition is, but I'm pretty sure it started after Norway was liberated from Germany in 1945. I'm not good at explaining, so if you want to know more just click here for the wikipedia.

The rest of the pics are from the Russ parade. Russ is what we call people who are graduating from high school. They spend the 3 weeks before May 17th wearing weird clothes, doing weird "dares" and mostly just being drunk. The teachers hate it, but I remember it as good fun ^^. But ya, they end it all with a parade as well. I could tell you more, but read the wiki instead.

I love the culture you provide. Thanks again for the pics. It's a nice way to see parts of the world that one normally one would not have access to.

The first May 17th children's parade was organised in 1869, by a schoolteacher named Peder Quam - it only included boys from the school where he was a teacher. For 1870 Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson organised a larger parade, which included 1200 boys (girls were not allowed to participate until several years later).

Wow, det är fascinerande hur mycket ni norrmän firar er nationaldag jämfört med oss svenskar.

Haha, vår studentdag, som vi kallar den, er lite mer sofistikerad än er. :P

Not all russ spend their entire russ time being drunk. Some of us actually had too much school work. :( *is a Red russ this year*
And I think our russ were a lot less fun than the russ you have photos of...if only because there were - what? Perhaps 20 of us in the parade? (then again, there are only 70-something of us - we have one high school with Red russ where I live)
AndI don't think there were any Black or Blue russ, either (actually, we don't have Blue russ where I live, but usually there are at least a few Blacks...I haven't seen anyone this year, though. o.O)

It looks like fun. I love parades. This weekend we have the Carnival of cultures in our neighbourhood in Kreuzberg. There will be 600 000 people dancing and drinking and celebrating the diverity of all different nationalitys living in Berlin. It's a bit like the Notting hill carnival. And 2 weeks later the Gay pride parade...

great pics, a lot of fun. and some v. Beautiful people too, among lots of very happy nice looking people.
funny though... have you ever seen the movie Cabaret, with Liza Minelli and Joel Grey? there's a lovely line where Joel Grey, introducing the dancing girls with his really heavy "German" accent, says something like...
"Helga, und Mimi, und Inge, etc... Every vun a wirgin"
Now why did I think of that line when I saw your pics of those high school kids!?
23rd-May-2007 05:47 pm (UTC)
No idea? :P

Thank you for the culture sipho.

I wish there was something like that in america, aside from the usual drunken grad parties. I guess, something with more substance.
