so i wonder how long my computer will survive
15th-Feb-2009 03:09 pm

I've been having a lot of problems with it lately, and I'm starting to worry I will be computerless soon.

I have an old Power Mac G5 that I took over from my friend when he got a new computer. One month ago it started to sometimes freeze completely. I thought maybe it was my "even older) harddrive, so it was replaced and Lolo helped me install Leopard. But yesterday it did it again, and this morning it has been doing it many times.

I know I spend way too much time on the computer anyway, but if it died completely then that will keep me from doing my photos and this journal and everything. Not really sure what I will do when that time comes. No money >.<

Maybe I can have it fixed somehow...

Or! My birthday is March 1st! Can someone please send me this one?

ps: I'm joking. Please don't do that :P
pps: Not that anyone would :P
ppps: But still! Joke!

At that point, you can only make your computer comfortable. Sounds like a memory leak or something of the sort. Which would be a pricey repair. If you need a computer in the end, and can't afford a mac pro just get a mac mini for now. it'd still be faster than a g5...

my other friend suggested to switch back to pc, which is a lot cheaper. i really prefer mac, but it is a lot better than nothing.

Why not take it in to the Mac store and have a Genius check it? See what they say. I don't think they charge for repairs (unless you need a new part).

Ye they charge :P
And I'm pretty sure I need a new part. I'd rather spend money on a new computer, as this one is old.

I know you had problems ages ago with losing photos- so I'm sure this has crossed your mind already- but I'd take this as an opportunity to back up everything you don't want to lose.

My Macbook Pro (2 years old) has started to freeze randomly when coming off screensaver, and the DVD drive is fucked. I should really take it to get fixed since I got that 3 year extended warranty thing. But I'd have to back up everything first, and, erm delete all the naughty stuff off it before I took it in.

I already backed up everything before I changed the harddrive :)

I have a mac pro got it in nov of 07, you can always get a refurbished one.

G5's are nice, but least with Intel chip can be more compatible.

I'd love a mac pro but they are expensive.

Maybe the RAM's gone bad- you can try to replace one stick at a time, turn comp on, and test. Or it could also be a hardware issue- is there anything new that you've connected to your mac recently-t hat could cause the problem.
